Beginner Information on World at War:

Hello and welcome to World at War! I'm Blue Dragon, the creator of this game. Here I'm going to try and explain a little about World at War for you new recruits. More in-depth explainations of the game can be found on the Help page, but you'll be better off just trying out the game after reading this. Then if you want more info on something in particular, check out the Help or FAQ pages.

If you have played the board game RISK, you should have no problem learning to play World at War.

World at War is NOT an action game. It is a strategy game which normally takes weeks to months to complete. If you do not expect to be able to return regularly, you probably will NOT enjoy this game.

Still, please by all means give it a try! Join some games, you might find you love it! Hundreds do.

However, on your first visit you probably won't even be able to start playing until enough other players join your games to kick it off, which may take hours. There's also an active Forum here for comments, complaints, suggestions, help etc. Free accounts can only post to the Freebie Forum, but you can glean a LOT of good information from them. Don't hesitate to drop in!

Here's a quick synopsis of how a standard game of World at War works:
First, a game is created with certain options, one being how many people will be playing the game from 3 to 6. The game is then listed when people log in as Waiting for Players. Once the last player has joined the game, the game begins...

The object of the standard WaW game is to occupy all the countries on the map, having eliminated all your opponents. There are variants with other objectives you can read about in the Help section.

Once started, any player in the game can play his turn. However, once his turn is finished he cannot take another turn until all other players have taken theirs OR until the next day. (NOTE: "Sequential" option games work more like a board game where each player gets a turn after the previous player has finished.)

In each turn, there are 3 "Phases". The first is the Deployment phase. Each turn, you are given a certain number of armies to place in countries you own. The number of armies given is based on the number of countries and continents you own. You continue to deploy these armies until all are deployed on your countries. Then you begin Phase 2 - Attack.

In the Attack phase, you may attack from any country you own to any opponent's country. The odds of winning an attack are based on simulated dice rolls which are themselves based on the number of armies you and your opponent have on the countries in conflict. Details can be found in the Help page. You can completely skip your attack phase if desired, or you can continue attacking repeatedly until you have no more armies to attack with. When finished with the Attack phase, you move to phase 3 - Fortification.

In the Fortification phase, you may move armies from one country you own to another, bordering country that you own. Some games allow unlimited fortifications, but the standard game only allows one fortification move per turn. When completed, the turn ends and you must wait until the others have finished thier turns.

This continues until one player eliminates the last competitor and the game is over. When the game ends, ranking points are given to the winning player from the losing player. These points are based on a formula that gives more points to a low rank winning player than a higher ranked winning player. Again, details can be found in the Help page.

There are 2 ranking scores kept for each player. The first is an Overall score which is never reset. The second is a Monthly score which is reset on the 1st day of each month. Winning monthly players are announced in the Forums, and the top 6 players are automatically joined into a special Champions game. The next 6 players are also joined into a special Consolation game each month.

That is the basics. There are MANY options available to vary game play. It is not at all unusual that one player in a game doesn't take his turn in a day. When that happens, you end up being able to only take 1 turn per day. However, don't let that deter you! It's STILL a great game, as many have found.

Here are my opinions on why World at War IS a great online game:

#1 - Strategy. You have plenty of time to consider your strategy. Politics are ALSO part of strategy and by using the Chatter feature you can wage political war as well as just a war of numbers.

#2 - Time. This game does NOT require great amounts of time. I treat it as a morning ritual to get me mentally prepared for the day ahead and play all my games before work.

#3 - Community. Over time, you begin to learn your opponents. You learn their strategies and policies. You also come to like some of them. For beginners you may think the Premium account structure is a way for me to make money. I don't deny that, but even moreso it is a way to weed out players who try to cheat, resulting in a better community for those who support and contribute to World at War. At this point we have some 800+ active accounts. There are some VERY involved, active and genuinely good people playing WaW now. You're welcome to become one too!

#4 - Evolution. This game has been in development since 1999 and has continued to evolve. In one sense, it IS a one-man project. I do the coding alone. However, in another very real sense it is NOT a one-man operation! The suggestions and opinions I get from the player keep me hopping, and most of the options are the direct result of suggestions from the players. I expect it to continue to evolve for a long time to come!

That's about it. Please don't be intimidated by World at War. Remember, you can't HURT anything here!
